The Shaolin Covenant begins with Raul "Luca" Mendroza, who is born to a prostitute in a place known as La Ciudad de los Muertos, City of the Dead and eventually becomes educated in the trade craft of an assassin.
As the reader becomes more involved with "Luca's" character, they quickly become familiar with Karla Brandt. Karla Brandt, who becomes romantically involved with Raul "Luca" Mendroza is a composite of the many flight attendants who worked on Pan American Airways during the authors many international flights.
Pan Am Airways, originally founded as Pan American Airways and commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial flag carrier of the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991.
